Major Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, affecting between 10% – 20% of the general population. Globally, it is estimated that more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is a major
contributor to the overall global burden of disease.
Fabry Disease (FD) is considered a rare disease (incidence ~1:7.000 calculated in neonatal screening) included in the group of Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSD) and new treatments for these pathologies are generally designated as orphan drugs.
Oral health is major health problem and dental diseases are considered among the most common (Oral Health Atlas, 2015 – FDI). The prevalence of oral diseases varies depending on the geographic region they occur. They are based on various individual, social, availability and accessibility factors, and performance of health services.
Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed tumor and the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide (with a 5-year survival rate in Spain of less than 11%). Most patients are diagnosed at advanced stages, where surgery is not feasible and therapeutic decision-making must be rapid and precise. Tumor heterogeneity and the biological complexity of this disease make it difficult to select the most appropriate treatment for each patient.
PWH, the population of older people living with HIV, is growing rapidly thanks to advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, this group faces unique challenges related to accelerated aging and a higher prevalence of comorbidities compared to people without HIV. These comorbidities, which include cardiovascular, metabolic, and other chronic conditions, are largely driven by persistent chronic inflammation—a hallmark of HIV infection that is not fully resolved with effective ART. Chronic inflammation contributes to the progressive decline of immune function and the development of multiple age-associated diseases, complicating clinical management and affecting the quality of life of these patients.
The ECMO simulation mannequin allows for realistic practice in managing critical complications, such as low preload, high afterload, cannula kinking, and the appearance of air bubbles in the system, through remotely controlled scenarios integrated with real ECMO consoles.
It is proposed a multiplex, bead-based SERS biosensor for rapid, non-invasive saliva detection of cognitive impairment. It will measure SALVIA proteins (a saliva-based biomarker developed and protected by our group), using antibodies functionalized with a Raman “antenna” on SiO₂@Ag beads. Protein binding changes the Raman signal, enabling sensitive, ratiometric quantification in minutes. The asset will offer portable, scalable, and objective early diagnosis and patient stratification.
BiomeXplore is a massive data hub designed to evaluate the health status of a community of people based on their gut microbiota and associated exposome. As part of the European Dataspaces, it is a structured environment that allows secure, federated and interoperable data sharing. BiomeXplore employs advanced AI models trained on taxonomic and functional profiles to classify samples and differentiate between healthy and disease-associated gut microbiota. To enable the integration of microbiota data as a health biomarker, we developed the Biom4Health index (B4H), a health-disease indicator derived from taxonomic microbiota profiles and calculated through bioinformatic pipelines and machine-learning approaches.
